Oshawa is Making a Comeback!
Oshawa is booming once again! While most Canadian cities saw economic growth slowing in 2011, Oshawa ranked third highest for economic growth and expects GDP to rise by 3.5% according to the news release by the Conference Board of Canada.
In the last five years, Oshawa has devoted countless resources in giving their downtown a good facelift. This has attracted a whole new community of working professionals and post secondary students to migrate into the inner core of Oshawa. Smaller businesses have moved in to meet the new demands of the area such as Isabella’s Chocolate shop and little gourmet coffee houses.
The Durham Region Courthouse on Bond Street stands less than two years old, holding 33 courtrooms and consolidated what previously use to be 8 different judicial locations across Durham. This has caused a positive influence on UOIT’s decision to move their Faculty of Criminology, Justice and Policy Studies to their new downtown campus. UOIT’s expansion to downtown has also included their Faculty of Education and Faculty of Social Science and Humanities.
Costco is currently under construction at Ritson and Adelaide. The projected completion is for August 2012. Mayor Henry was quoted saying “I think it’s one of the most exciting things that’s happened on Ritson Road in a long time,” and he sees the new store as a way to kick-start development in the area. With the GM centre just down the street already attracting big name concerts and shows as well, the area is becoming very lively and a great place to invest.
